Preparation for Diagnostic Test

Magnetic resonance
MR scanning unallowable is if the patient has metallic elements in the body, such as: cardiac valves, pacemakers, orthopedic plates, prosthesis, arterial clamps, metal parts of dentures, metal particles, or gunshot bullets. Patients suffering from claustrophobia (the fear of small enclosed places) - should be given mild sedatives before the exam in order to alleviate the fear. The patient should not eat for 6 hours before the exam.
Patients must remove their watch, jewelry, metal objects, or belt. Leave your mobile phone and magnetic card in the cabin - no metal objects are admissible in the room where the MR scanner is located.
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the contrasting medium or chemical substances. Patients who take insulin should have their exam scheduled in the morning - please take the insulin and a breakfast with you. If the patient is on constant medication, he or she may take it as usual with some still mineral water.
Empty your bladder before the exam.
The exam is entirely painless.

Computer tomography
Wear comfortable and loose clothing to the exam, ensuring it does not contain any metal elements, such as buttons, buckles, safety pins, or brooches. If the exam is performed at LUX MED Clinic, the patient will be given a single-use gown. Remove your jewelry, glasses or hearing aids.
Patients who are allergic to contrasting medium should inform their doctor about it.
If it is necessary to give the patient an intravenous contrast, it is advisable not to eat 5-6 hours before the exam. If the patient is on constant medication - he or she may take the medication on the day of the exam, possibly 3-4 hours before at the latest.
In the case of abdominal cavity tomography, the patient is given oral iodine contrasting medium. At LUX MED Clinic, the medium is administered by a technician shortly before the exam - 40-50 ml of UROPOLIN or UROGRAFIN is dissolved in 2 liters of water. The solution must be taken 2 hours before the exam. However, it must be taken slowly not to cause diarrhoea. After drinking the solution hot flushes or metallic taste in the mouth may be felt. The exam is entirely painless.
The exam should not be performed in pregnancy. Whenever in doubt, please contact your doctor.
Breastfeeding patients should discontinue breastfeeding for 24 hours after the exam.
If the following symptoms appear after the exam:
- headache
- breathlessness
- palpitations
- or itching,
they may signify an allergic reaction - inform your doctor immediately.

Mammography
Mammography is performed without any prior preparation. Wear two-piece clothing to the exam in order to be able easily to remove clothing above the waist. Take a bath on the day of the exam. Do not use any deodorant, talcum powder, lotion or cream from the waist up. In menstruating women, the best time to perform the exam is between 5-10 day of the cycle. In menopausal women, the exam may be carried out any day.
Bring with you previous mammae examination results, including the scan, if any.

X-ray of lumbar spin
Please take X-PREP (a prescription laxative you can buy in a pharmacy) on the night preceding the day of your examination. A light breakfast is allowed on the day of examination.

X-ray of abdominal cavity
2 - 3 days before the exam the diet should be light: do not eat fruit and vegetables, or drink juices and sparkling drinks.
In the case of an urography, inform your doctor if you are allergic to iodine or contrasting media, or have any other allergies.
For 2 days before the exam take Espumisan at a dose of 3 times 3-4 capsules daily.
One day before the exam at around 4 pm and at around 8 pm, take 20-45 ml of Phosfo-Laxative, washing it down with a large quantity of water (3-4 litres). This medication is available at a pharmacy without prescription.
On the day preceding the exam do not eat supper.
The exam must be performed on an empty stomach.
Before the contrasting media may be administered, an enema with " ENEMA" should be taken (available without prescription).

Urography
2 - 3 days before the exam the diet should be light: do not eat fruit and vegetables, or drink juices and sparkling drinks.
In the case of urography, inform your doctor if you are allergic to iodine or contrasting media, or have any other allergies.

Ultrasound of abdominal cavity
1. On the day preceding the exam take Espumisan at a dose of 3 times 3-4 capsules (an antigas medication - available at a pharmacy without prescription).
2. Do not eat 6 hours before the exam - it is not advisable to drink alcohol, coffee, sparkling liquids, or smoke.
3. On the day preceding the exam, the diet should be light and sparse.
4. The same steps should be taken before ultrasonography of the: kidneys, kidney arteries, portal vein, aorta, gynecological ultrasonography - (through the abdomen).
5. For correct assessment of the bladder and other organs in the smaller pelvis ( including prostate in men) it is necessary to perform the exam with a full bladder. To this end, drink 1-1.5 litres of non-sparkling liquid 1 hour before the exam. Sometimes the doctor may recommend repeating the exam with an empty bladder .
6. It is recommended to show your doctor the previous exams results. -
Vascular DopplerUS
(Examination of renal artery, portal vein, hip joints).
No eating for six hours before the test.

Kidney Ultrasound
Kidney US is included both in the US of abdomen and the urinary tract; it may be performed on an empty stomach and after consumption of liquids.

Ultrasound of urinary bladder and prostrate gland
Please drink 1.5 litre of non-sparkling liquid one hour before your test, no urination until after the test PERFORMED ONLY ON A FULL BLADDER.

Breast Ultrasound
1. The exam is best performed between 1-10 day of the menstrual cycle.
2. It is recommended to show the doctor the previous tests results, including mammography, (if any). -
Gynaecological examination through abdominal integuments (Ultrasound)
1. Drink 1,5 litre of non-sparkling liquid prior to the exam.
2. The exam should be performed with a full bladder. -
Transrectal Ultrasound
1. It is recommended to take an enema one day prior to the exam (ENEMA preparation is available at pharmacies) according to the instructions on the box.
2. Empty your bowels thoroughly before the exam. -
Gastroscopy
1. Bring with you the latest tests results for type B hepatitis (HBs) and anti-HCV.
2. The exam must be performed on an empty stomach (do not eat or drink 6 hours beforehand).
3. If the exam is performed in the evening, you may have a light breakfast.
4. It is advisable to provide previous gastroscopy results -
Rectoscopy
1. Two days before the exam switch to a liquid diet (jellies, soups and puddings) and drink large quantities of still mineral water (about 2 l).
2. On the day preceding the exam, take 3-6 teaspoons of Agiolox - and late in the evening take an enema ("ENEMA" is available without prescription).
3. You may drink liquids on the day of the exam. -
Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy
1. Bring with you the latest tests results for type B hepatitis (HBs) and anti-HCV.
2. If you had similar exams before, please bring the results with you.
3. On the day preceding the exam, prepare 4 litres of FORTRANS solution in accordance with the instructions (dissolve the 4 bags provided in 1 litre of still, lukewarm water). The solution should be drunk in the following manner:
- half in the evening, on the day preceding the exam
- half on the day of the exam (it is recommended to drink the last glass of the solution 3-4 hours before the exam)
4. Do not eat anything after you have taken FORTRANS solution. You may drink liquids (except for coffee and freshly squeezed juices).
5. FORTRANS solution causes diarrhoea ("intestinal cleansing"), so it is advisable to stay at home.
6. Two hours before the exam take an enema with ENEMA preparation (ENEMA is available without prescription).
7. Please come to the exam 30 minutes before its scheduled time (it does not apply to LUX MED Medical Centres in Warsaw).
8. Ask someone to accompany you to the exam. Do not drive a car afterwards.The first meal after the exam should be small and light.
9. Sometimes the exam may be followed by: loose stools with small quantities of blood, fever, or abdominal pain. These symptoms should subside within 48 hours after the exam. If you have any of the above, please see your doctor in order for him to prescribe some mild medication to relieve these symptoms. -
Laboratory urine tests
1. The specimen should be delivered in a special container, which is available at a pharmacy or treatment room. The container should be clearly signed (name, surname and age).
2. In the case of urine culture test, a special container is used. The container should be antiseptic, opened just before the use - do not touch the inside walls of the container.
3. The specimen should be taken in the morning, after thorough wash of the urogenital area.
4. Unless the doctor recommends otherwise, the urine specimen should come from the middle part (pass the first part into the toilet, and only afterwards fill in the container).
5. The specimen should be delivered to the treatment room in a maximum of 2 hours, provided it has been stored in a cool place. -
24-hours urine collection
1. The specimen should be delivered in a special container, which is available at a pharmacy or treatment room.
2. The container should be clearly signed (name, surname and age).
3. The collection is started from the second passing of urine on day one, and it ends on the first passing of urine on the next day (the first, morning urine should be passed to the toilet; afterwards, urine should be passed to the container; the collection ends with the passing of urine into the container in the morning on the next day).
4. The container should be large enough to accomodate the whole urine collected during 24 hours. It is best, if the container includes a scale, in order to measure the volume.
5. The urine should be kept at about. 4oC during the collection.
6. After the collection, carefully check the volume, then stir the contents and collect about 30-50 ml of urine and place it in a single-use plastic container. The container should be clearly signed. It is necessary to indicate the collection volume for the whole 24 hours. -
Stool laboratory test
1. The sample should be delivered in a special container, which is available at a pharmacy or treatment room.
2. The container should be clearly signed (name, surname, age).
3. The sample should be collected with a special spatula stick included in the container.
4. The container should be filled up with the sample of the size of a hazelnut.
5. The container should be carefully locked and placed in a plastic bag.
The sample used for lamblia testing should be fresh. If the sample needs to be kept for a longer period of time, it should be frozen.
